China Student Visa (X Visa)

The X visa (Student Visa, X = Study) is issued to foreign nationals entering China for academic study, whether short-term or long-term.

It is categorized into X1 (Long-Term Study) and X2 (Short-Term Study), with the core distinction being whether the intended period of study exceeds 180 days.

The X1 visa requires conversion into a student residence permit after entry, while the X2 visa allows for a temporary stay within its validity period without further conversion.

Key Differences Between X1 and X2 Visa for China

  • X1 (Long-Term Study Visa): Issued to students staying in China for more than 180 days. The visa page typically reads “000/30 days.” Holders must apply for a Student-Type Residence Permit at the local Exit-Entry Administration within 30 days of entry. Once approved, this permit is valid for 1–5 years, depending on the length of the academic program.
  • X2 (Short-Term Study Visa): Issued to students staying in China for 180 days or less. The visa page specifies the exact duration of stay (e.g., 90, 120, or 180 days) and supports single or double entries. Holders may exit before the visa expires without needing to convert it into a residence permit.

Eligibility and Study Types in China:

1. X1 Visa (Long-Term Study, >180 Days)

  • Students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees in China;
  • Exchange students participating in programs lasting more than half a year (e.g., one academic year);
  • Trainees enrolled in vocational training or Chinese language programs exceeding 180 days;
  • Participants in other long-term study/research programs approved by the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

2. X2 Visa (Short-Term Study, ≤180 Days)

  • Participants in short-term language courses (e.g., summer Chinese programs, three-month cultural immersion);
  • Exchange students on programs shorter than one semester;
  • Attendees of short-term professional skills training (≤180 days);
  • Participants in winter/summer camps or short-term academic visits (non-degree, non-long-term research).

Processing Time for Chinese Student Visa Applications

Under normal circumstances, approval takes approximately 5 – 9 working days after submission of complete documents. Actual processing time is subject to the chosen service type (such as Top Urgent, Express & Standard services), as well as the review schedule of the Chinese visa authorities.

Important Notes

  • Former Chinese citizens who have acquired foreign nationality and wish to study in mainland China must apply for an X1 or X2 visa based on their program duration.
  • Upon graduation, if you wish to work in China, you must exit the country, apply for a Z (Work) visa abroad, re-enter on that visa, and then apply for a Work-Type Residence Permit. You cannot convert an X visa directly into a work visa.

FAQ about China Student Visa (X Visa)

Extensions for X2 visas are generally not permitted or very difficult to approve. If your course duration increases (e.g., from 90 to 120 days), you will typically need to exit China and apply for a new X2 visa with the corresponding validity. For long-term studies, always apply for an X1 visa directly. Do not attempt to chain multiple X2 visas to extend your stay, as this is considered circumventing residence permit regulations and may result in visa refusal or deportation.

Employment is strictly prohibited under a student visa or residence permit. Only on-campus work-study programs arranged by your school and approved by the relevant authorities are permitted. Unauthorized part-time jobs, remote full-time work for overseas companies (even if paid abroad), or internships without proper authorization are violations that may jeopardize visa renewals and, in serious cases, lead to deportation.
