China Business Visa (M Visa)

The M visa (Business Visa, M = Trade/Commercial Activities) is issued to foreign nationals entering China for business-related purposes such as trade, commerce, science, technology, and cultural exchanges. It is the second most common Chinese visa type after the L (Tourist) visa and serves as the primary short-term entry document for foreign business owners, buyers, project managers, and technical exchange personnel.

The M visa is specifically designed for short-term commercial, economic, and professional activities. Its core requirements are genuine business relationships + a valid invitation letter from a Chinese entity. Holders may not engage in employment but benefit from flexible validity periods and multiple-entry options, making it the preferred non-resident visa for international business professionals.

Permitted Activities

  • Trade negotiations, contract signing, procurement, and market research;
  • Attending commercial exhibitions, trade fairs, and industry summits (e.g., Canton Fair, CIIE);
  • Technical exchanges, project coordination, after-sales support, and equipment installation/debugging (non-employment based);
  • Inter-company visits, board/shareholder meetings, and routine reporting for representative offices;
  • Other short-term activities related to trade or commercial interests.

M Visa ≠ Work Visa

  • Allowed: Meetings, site visits, negotiations, contract signing, short-term technical guidance, exhibition participation;
  • Prohibited: Long-term employment with a Chinese company, receiving monthly salaries, or clocking in for regular work (these fall under the Z visa + residence permit “employment” category).

Who Is It For?

  • Foreign buyers, suppliers, and distributors;
  • Short-term project/technical staff dispatched by multinational corporations (who do not meet long-term employment thresholds);
  • Staff of overseas companies’ China representative offices (representative offices cannot hire full-time foreign employees and commonly use M visas);
  • Entrepreneurs during the pre-registration phase of setting up a company in China;
  • Frequent business travelers engaged in cross-border trade.

Required Documents

  • Original passport and a copy of the photo page;
  • Completed visa application form and confirmation page;
  • Official business invitation letter issued by a Chinese host entity;
  • Dispatch letter/certificate of employment from the applicant’s overseas employer (in English or Chinese).

Application Process

  • Free initial consultation on M visa applications
  • Tailored advice for applicants and Chinese inviting entities regarding eligibility, alternatives, and approval likelihood
  • Invoicing and payment
  • Obtain signed authorization from the applicant and/or inviting company
  • Provide a customized document checklist
  • Complete all required visa application forms
  • Review submitted documents to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Visa Center
  • Collect the approved visa label upon issuance
  • Deliver the visa to the applicant.

Processing Time

Under normal circumstances, approval takes approximately 5 – 9 working days after submission of complete documents. Actual processing time is subject to the chosen service type (such as Top Urgent, Express & Standard services), as well as the review schedule of the Chinese visa authorities.

Remarks

Unlike the L (Tourist) visa, the M visa does not strictly require round-trip flight tickets or hotel bookings. However, a compliant Chinese business invitation letter and evidence of a genuine business relationship are mandatory.

FAQ about China Business Visa (M Visa)

No. The M visa strictly prohibits any form of full-time or part-time employment. Working on an M visa constitutes illegal employment. For long-term work, you must apply directly for a Z (Work) visa abroad, enter China on that visa, and then apply for a work-type residence permit.

Absolutely not. Engaging in full-time or part-time employment while on an M visa is illegal. Both the foreign national and the employing company face penalties, including fines and potential inclusion on the immigration blacklist.

Generally, no. To work long-term in China, you must exit the country and apply for a Z visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad. After re-entering on the Z visa, you can then apply for a work-type residence permit.
