The L visa (Tourist Visa; L = Leisure/Tourism) is issued to foreign nationals entering China for tourism, vacation, short-term non-settlement family visits, exhibition attendance, competitions, or other private purposes. It is currently the most widely issued Chinese visa category.
Compared with work, business, or family reunion visas, the L visa features simpler documentation, faster processing, and flexible validity—ranging from single-entry to multi-year multiple-entry options for most nationalities—making it the most suitable choice for short-term private visits.
Prohibited Activities:
- No legal employment, paid work, or internships (including unpaid assistance at a company);
- No long-term settlement;
- Cannot be directly converted into a work visa or residence permit.
Who Is It For?
- Foreign tourists (independent travelers or group tour participants);
- Ethnic Chinese holding foreign passports making short visits to mainland relatives;
- Participants attending short-term non-business meetings, competitions, or exhibitions (if no Chinese invitation letter is available for an M visa, an L visa may be used, provided the purpose is clearly non-commercial);
- Short-term visits combined with travel itineraries.
Visa Validity & Duration
Depending on nationality, application materials, and prior travel history, the L visa may be approved as single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry. Each stay is typically granted for 30, 60, or 90 days. The final validity period and permitted duration of stay are subject to the decision of the Chinese visa authorities.
