The Z visa (Work Visa, Z = Work) is issued to foreign nationals intending to take up employment or assume a position in China. It operates under a pre-approval system: you must first obtain government pre-approval for work in mainland China before applying for a Z visa. After entering China on a Z visa, you must convert it into a long-term Foreigner’s Residence Permit to legally work in the country.
The Core Prerequisite for the Chinese Z Visa:
A valid Notice of Foreigner’s Work Permit is mandatory. This document must be applied for by your prospective Chinese employer through the local Bureau of Science and Technology (Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs) and the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau. The notice is issued as a PDF file featuring a barcode and QR code, or as a hard copy.
Within 30 days of entry, you must visit the local science and technology bureau and the exit-entry administration to obtain both the Foreigner’s Work Permit and the Foreigner’s Residence Permit. This residence permit serves as your long-term credential for legal employment and multiple entries/exits.
Z Visa Specifications:
The Z visa is typically issued for single entry, with a 90-day validity period and a 30-day duration of stay. It is solely for lawful entry and initial registration; it does not permit long-term stay on its own. You must complete the residence permit conversion within the 30-day stay period.
Required Documents:
- Notice of Foreigner’s Work Permit
- Completed visa application form
- Applicant’s original valid passport and a photocopy of the photo page
- Applicant’s recent passport-sized photo.
Application Process:
- Provide complimentary consultation on Z visa applications
- Advise both the applicant and the sponsoring Chinese company on eligibility, alternative options, and likelihood of approval
- Invoicing and payment
- Obtain signed authorization from the applicant and/or the employing company
- Provide a tailored document checklist
- Complete all required visa application forms
- Review submitted documents to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Maintain ongoing communication with the Visa Center and monitor application progress
- Collect the approved visa label upon issuance
- Deliver the visa to the applicant

Processing Time:
Under normal circumstances, approval takes approximately 5 – 9 working days after submission of complete documents. Actual processing time is subject to the chosen service type (such as Top Urgent, Express & Standard services), as well as the review schedule of the Chinese visa authorities.

FAQ about China Work Visa (Z Visa)
No. Employment is strictly prohibited during your stay on an S1 visa. If your spouse wishes to work, she must apply separately for a Z visa and complete the full work visa procedure independently.
You may apply for the Z visa with a passport valid for less than 12 months. However, when converting to a residence permit after entry, you will be required to present a new passport first. It is strongly recommended to renew your passport in advance to avoid complications with subsequent procedures.
