The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) has introduced the Expanded Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), which officially takes effect on 1 September 2025. This change opens new opportunities for people who want to retire earlier in the Philippines, as the minimum age requirement is lowered from 50 to 40.
From this date, the previous SRRV scheme is no longer available for new applications. All new filings must follow the Expanded SRRV program. Existing SRRV holders remain unaffected and can continue under their current visa terms.
What changes on 1 September 2025
- Minimum age for new applicants is lowered to 40.
- All new applications are processed under the Expanded SRRV program.
- The old SRRV scheme is closed for new applicants.
- Current SRRV holders keep their visa benefits and obligations.
Who is affected
New applicants: Individuals aged 40 and above are now eligible to apply under the expanded rules. This makes the Philippines an option for retirees and early retirees who want long-term residence with more flexibility.
Current SRRV holders: No changes apply. Your visa remains valid, and you can continue to enjoy its benefits as before.
What remains to be clarified
The PRA will release full implementing guidelines that specify deposits, fees, categories, and requirements for the Expanded SRRV program. While these details are pending, applicants can begin preparing standard documentation such as:
- Valid passport
- Medical examination from an accredited clinic
- Police clearance from the country of residence
- Civil status documents for dependents
- Financial evidence (pension or deposit, once the new requirements are confirmed)
Why this matters for retirees
Lowering the age limit makes the Philippines more accessible for younger retirees who want to relocate sooner. With its low cost of living, English-speaking communities, and warm climate, the Philippines is already a popular destination. The expanded visa program strengthens its position as a retirement hub in Asia.
